Hotel del Coronado History
Few American hotels carry a story as long — or as colorful — as The Del. Here's the short version of how a Queen Anne fantasy on a sleepy Pacific peninsula became a National Historic Landmark, a Hollywood backdrop, and the country's most famous haunted resort.
When was the Hotel del Coronado built?
The Del opened on February 19, 1888, after roughly 11 months of round-the-clock construction. At the time it was the largest resort hotel on Earth — a Queen Anne fantasy of redwood, white siding, and crimson roofs rising straight from the sand.
Who built it? The Reid brothers, the architects
Developers Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story commissioned brothers James and Merritt Reid — young Indiana architects with no prior hotel of this scale — to design the resort. Their wooden Victorian masterpiece still stands today as one of the largest surviving timber structures in the U.S.
Famous guests: presidents, royals & L. Frank Baum
More than 15 U.S. presidents have stayed at The Del, alongside Thomas Edison, Charles Lindbergh, and the Prince of Wales. L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, designed the crown-shaped chandeliers in the Crown Room — and many believe the hotel's gleaming silhouette inspired his Emerald City.
Some Like It Hot & Marilyn Monroe (1958)
In 1958, Billy Wilder shot the beach scenes of Some Like It Hot — with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon — on the sand directly in front of The Del, which doubled for a 1920s Florida resort. The 1959 film remains the hotel's most-photographed claim to Hollywood fame.
The Kate Morgan ghost story (room 3327)
On Thanksgiving weekend 1892, a young woman checked in alone under the name Lottie A. Bernard and was found dead on the exterior staircase days later. She was later identified as Kate Morgan. Her old quarters — originally room 302, today room 3327 — are the most-requested haunted suite in America, with regular reports of flickering lights, cool drafts, and a TV that switches on by itself.
National Historic Landmark status (1977)
The Del was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, placing it on the same federal register as Monticello and the Empire State Building. A multi-year, $550M+ restoration completed in 2025 returned the original 1888 Victorian wing to its full period glory.

The Del has been marrying couples on this beach since 1887 — one year before the hotel officially opened.
